Nick's Journey

Nick didn’t know what he wanted to do when he left school. He was referred to the Employability and Skills Service in October 2017 and we provided support to help him realise his options.

We enrolled him in our Winter’s leavers programme before beginning an Activity Agreement.  Several avenues were explored that helped Nick build his confidence, communication skills and gain work experience. Nick expressed an interest in working with motor bikes or cars. His support worker Marie arranged work experience with Alan Steel at Bridge End Garage, which he started in January 2018.

Bridge End Garage were impressed by Nick’s willingness to learn and enthusiasm, so when Marie spoke to them regarding the possibility of employing him as a Trainee Mechanic using the Young Person Wage Incentive, they were happy to take him on.  He started his first paid job with the garage in March 2018; at the same time he started an apprenticeship mechanic course with Dumfries College.

“With help from Alan (Bridge End Garage) and Marie (ESS) I got this job that I really enjoy!”

He has now completed his first year in paid employment with the continued support and encouragement from the Employability and Skills Service and Bridge End Garage.
